Last night, the fourth and final Elisa Nordic group game was decided. We were placed in group D together with Lyngby Vikings, Ølgod Efterskole and a mix team that goes by the name 'tier1subs'. We entered the group as the 2nd seed, due to the Lyngby Vikings being invited and we won the first and most difficult qualification that gave access to the group game.
We started the group by beating Ølgod Efterskole 16-3 & 19-16, after which we played the group final against Lyngby Vikings, which at that time was #33 on the world rankings. Here we showed nice figure, but unfortunately lost 1-2 with the results: 11-16, 16-8, 13-16.
This meant that we actually had to face tier1subs in the group final, as they managed to beat Ølgod Efterskole in the bottom match. However, they were disqualified when it was revealed that one or more of the tier1subs players were using cheating. That brings us to tonight's group final.
16-7 - Nuke
The first match was at Ølgod's map-pick, Nuke. However, we consider ourselves to be a strong Nuke crew, so we were quite happy with the outcome of the veto. We start the match sensibly, where we effectively get shut down for the opponent's T-side with i.a. several good individual plays, which gave a nice 9-1 lead. The rest of the half, however, offered several unfortunate timings at the same time as we missed some trades, which gave Ølgod five rounds before the half was over. A 10-5 halftime on CT Nuke is still approved, but it puts significantly greater pressure on the 2nd half gun round. Then, however, it is fortunate that we have team captain Zibron, who managed to keep his head cold but his fingers warm, and clutched a 1v4 with the bomb planted (see clip below). With a victory in the pistol round, we quickly gained momentum on the T-side, and we therefore also close the match safely with 16-7.
There was no doubt here: 36 kills in just 23 rounds scream impact! Additionally add the value of his calls and clutch and you have a deserved MVP master!
16-14 - Train
The second match, just like the last time we met Ølgod, suddenly became much closer. We start on the T-side, where we actually win the hugely important gun round. It is alpha omega that you get a good start on Train, so as not to be run over by heavy CT utility later, if the opponents first get a financial lead. However, we throw the subsequent round to Ølgod's force-buy, so we end up in something close to the same situation as if we had lost the gun round. From here, the just mentioned happens, and the opponents suddenly have a bank close to $10,000 per player, and before we know it, we are 2-7 behind. After several attempts at A-takes without success, however, we find some openings on the B-site where our postplants were mostly successful. From here we started biting a bit from us, but it only reached the halfway numbers 5-10. Since we lost round 2 in the first half, it was hugely important that we took the gun round on the CT side, to go '1-1' in gun rounds. Luckily we managed that too, so we get back to 8-10 before the gunrounds begin. Unlike the last showdown against Ølgod on Train, where we won 13-2, this time we could not shut down the defensive as effectively. In fact, it's suddenly so bad that we're behind 9-14. Fortunately, the boys have shown excellent mentality every day, where we have made impressive comebacks up to several times in the season - and this was another one of them. As the clip below shows, the defensive started to look solid, and we therefore took one round after another. 7 rounds in a row and we win the match in a close 16-14 affair.
Even as the fight began to escalate, the captain went first. With 29 kills and a 1.81 k / d, he was a key reason why the comeback became a reality.
With the victory we secured a 2nd place in the group, which means we have to face the winner of group A: Copenhagen Flames. At the time of writing, they are #65 on the world rankings. It will be an exciting Greater Copenhagen derby, which is also covered by HLTV, so the whole world can follow. We go into the fight as underdogs, but also see upsets. The match will be played on 11/3, and we are looking forward!
